Accelerated Actions and Transformative Pathways on Clean Cooking for the Delivery of Sustainable Development Goal 7

TagsEnergy Access, Renewable Energy

With over 4 million people dying every year from noncommunicable diseases caused by household air pollution and 2.8 billion still lacking access to clean cooking solutions, accelerating progress towards universal access to clean cooking fuels and technologies must be a top political, economic, and environmental priority. The COVID-19 outbreak has stressed the need for targeted actions and investments to build back better, increase resilience and tackle one the biggest challenges of our time.

The transition to an inclusive and sustainable energy future called by SDG7, including universal access to clean cooking solutions will lead to positive climate, socio-economic, gender-balanced and health outcomes, serving the achievement of the Paris Agreement and various interlinked SDGs, including SDG3 on health, SDG5 on gender, SDG10 on inequalities, SDG13 on climate.

High Level Political Forum Side Event

The Government of Kenya together with multiple partners, including Hivos, ENERGIA, MECS, TENN, Clean Cooking Alliance, ESMAP, UNDESA, WHO, World Bank, have teamed up together to host the side event:

“Accelerated Actions and Transformative Pathways on Clean Cooking
for the Delivery of Sustainable Development Goal 7”

During this side event, we will discuss the multisectoral efforts needed to facilitate the socio-economic short- and long term interventions during, post and beyond the Covid-19 pandemic. A focus will be on how to address long-standing inequalities and accelerate the achievement of universal access to clean cooking, while strengthening the resilience of the poor, women and other vulnerable groups. The Ministers of Energy from Kenya and Nepal will weigh in on government policies and actions to scale up clean cooking technologies in their countries. The possible role of the European Union in accelerating access to clean cooking will be discussed, while international bodies will reflect on the overarching, long-term interventions needed. Members of CSOs will shine a light on inclusivity and equality, community involvement and people centered solutions.

This online side event will be co- moderated by Amb. Macharia Kamau, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kenya and Hon. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All.
