AEEG Seeks Industrial Off-Taker For 49 MW Solar And BESS Project In South Africa
The African Earth Energy Group (AEEG) is seeking an anchor industrial off-taker for its proposed 49 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The project aims to supply reliable and competitively priced renewable electricity to industrial and commercial consumers operating in the region.
The proposed facility is strategically located within one of South Africa’s major industrial and smelting corridors. This location provides an opportunity to serve energy-intensive businesses that are looking for alternative electricity procurement options to manage rising power costs and address challenges associated with the national electricity grid.
The project will combine utility-scale solar power generation with battery energy storage technology to provide a more stable and dependable electricity supply. Through long-term electricity wheeling arrangements or direct power procurement frameworks, AEEG intends to supply renewable energy to an industrial customer that can benefit from predictable electricity pricing and improved energy security.
The integration of battery storage is expected to strengthen the project’s ability to support industrial electricity requirements. Energy storage systems can help manage fluctuations in solar generation by storing electricity produced during periods of strong sunlight and making it available when generation declines or demand increases. This approach can improve the reliability of renewable energy supply for businesses with significant electricity consumption.
AEEG has already progressed several development activities for the project. These include detailed site assessments, grid integration planning and engagement with local stakeholders to align the development with regional requirements. These activities represent important steps towards preparing the project for implementation and future commercial operations.
