Uganda: Union Rolls Out 4,000 Electric Motorcycles for Boda Boda Riders

The Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union (Union) has taken another major step in revolutionizing Uganda's urban transport sector with the rollout of 4,000 brand-new electric motorcycles for distribution across the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

The motorcycles, unveiled at Union's headquarters in Kazinga, Kiira Municipality, will be offered to riders at low cost under flexible loan repayment terms.

The initiative aims to improve livelihoods while advancing Uganda's transition to clean and affordable transport.

"These motorcycles are not only environmentally friendly but also come with enhanced safety features that make them a smart investment for every rider," said Nebart Tumwebaze, Union's head of asset finance products.

Each bike is fitted with an advanced tracking device to reduce theft risks and improve rider accountability.

With zero emissions and reduced noise, the rollout aligns with Uganda's broader climate resilience and green mobility goals.

Franka Mawejje, Chairperson of UNION, said the cooperative's mission is to uplift riders through innovation and inclusive financing.

"We urge our members to embrace these electric motorcycles as tools for economic transformation. They are affordable to run and can help increase savings," she said.

However, Mawejje cautioned against misuse, noting that some riders had begun removing UNION-issued stickers before completing payments.

"This behavior undermines our trust-based system. We call on all beneficiaries to fulfill their obligations so others can benefit too," she added.

Riders expressed satisfaction with the initiative but urged for expanded infrastructure, particularly battery replacement stations, to sustain daily operations.

"The bikes are affordable and allow us to save more. But we need accessible battery swap points to keep us moving efficiently," one rider said.

General Secretary John Micheal Ssejjembe advised beneficiaries to treat the motorcycles as business tools, including renting them out when not in use, warning that poor maintenance could lead to breakdowns and loan defaults.

UNION plans to complete distribution of all 4,000 motorcycles by the end of the month, marking a significant step toward transforming Uganda's boda boda sector through green mobility and financial inclusion.
