Market Information
Kenya is committed to national and global targets of reliable, affordable, and clean energy. In line with the Least Cost Power Development Plan (2020-2040), significant public and private resources have gone into the energy sector to increase generation capacity as well as the expansion and reinforcement of transmission and distribution systems, including last mile connections. Despite this, energy outage is common and is explained by loss of power generation, extreme weather and vandalism.
The average electricity retail tariff and generation cost are high due to low efficiency and losses in the energy value chain. The share of renewable energy in the energy mix increased from 79.3% in 2017-2018 to around 90% in 2022-2023 with geothermal contributing about 6.0 TWh in 2023 (around 54% of renewable generation). Electricity installed capacity increased from 2,388 MW (2015) to 3,555 MW (2023). In terms of supply, total electricity generation peaked at 14 TWh in 2022 before easing to 12.5 TWh in 2023; renewables provided 11.2 TWh in 2023, while fossil generation remained comparatively limited at 1.3 TWh.
